Finding the Right Contractor for Your Project

by Jason Doane

Small space bathroom remodeling projects are a great way to increase the aesthetics and value of your home with minimal cost. The return on investment for small space bathroom remodeling projects is one of the highest of all remodeling projects at an average of 80-90 percent. Finding the right contractor for your project can seem overwhelming. This guide will make the decision making process much easier.

The first step is to get an idea of what you want. Do some research on the Internet or in local home improvement stores to get ideas and samples. Small space bathroom remodeling projects are not likely to be too expensive and therefore shouldn’t be cost prohibitive.

Once you know what you want, it’s time to begin looking for a contractor. You’ll probably want to start by speaking with friends and neighbors. Ask them if they have worked with any contractors for small space bathroom remodeling projects and if they have any advice or recommendations. A lot of contractors get their next jobs via recommendations from homeowners they have worked with in the past.

Another great place to search for contractors is on the Internet. There are many websites that will help you find a quality contractor and many contractors have their own websites. Some local home improvement stores will also do remodeling projects for you, provided you purchase the materials from them.

Next, you’ll want to select about 5-10 contractors from the ones you found on the Internet or through friends and neighbors. Make sure these contractors are properly licensed, bonded, and insured. Eliminate any who are not. There are websites you can use to check for contractor licensing, bonding, and insurance. Or you can contact the contractors and ask them to provide proof of licensing, bonding, and insurance.

Now you are ready to narrow the search even further. Select 3 or 4 from those 5-10 and check their references. Immediately eliminate any contractors who refuse to provide you with references. Some questions to ask the references are: “did the contractor complete the work as agreed?” or “did the contractor show up when they said they would?” and “did the contractor do quality work?” Select 2 or 3 contractors to get estimates from.

Most importantly when choosing a contractor for your small space bathroom remodeling project, trust your gut. Do you feel comfortable working with this person? Will you feel comfortable with them in your house for extended periods of time? If you answered “no,” eliminate that contractor.

Choosing the right contractor for your small space bathroom remodeling project might seem like an intimidating task, but if you follow this guide, it will be much easier. Remember, choosing the right contractor is a process. It’s not something that will be done quickly. Take your time and make a good decision.
